The challenge really is to illuminate polarizing debates without engaging in polarized debate.

It’s tricky, and it’s hard work, and it doesn’t always work.

One way to make it work is to get on the outside of an issue, to get enough distance between you and your priors that you can think about it again, in a fresh way. Sometimes, just raw geography will do the trick.

In the piece I just did for Persuasion, I think it worked.
