A tolerant society depends on some specific kinds of intolerance, particularly of restricting individual liberties beyond what is required to preserve liberty for all. This I take to be the central thesis of J. S. Mill's *On Liberty*. I think the central problem may well be how to understand, place, and enforce *limits* on tolerance, rather than in cultivating more of it. Ironically, the demand from the Left that different lifestyle preferences be tolerated has given rise to an even more extreme intolerance than the demand seeks to eradicate. It might be said that the correct practice of tolerance requires us to be sufficiently intolerant of intolerance.
I like this essay, even though I am someone who recognizes that slaves acquired skills they leveraged for personal benefit such as purchase of freedom for family members. Growing up in Richmond, Virginia, I learned people can disagree without being disagreeable. It is ironic that I learned the trick to living side-by-side in a place haunted by the past. Wonderful insights in this post.
It’s so easy and frankly satisfying to be angry about things you cannot control. It takes a certain level of self awareness to realize it is exhausting and pushes out joy and frankly not worth it.

I've felt a backlash against intolerance of the abhorrent (from the wokish POV), but I don't feel it comes from tolerance. Exhaustion, maybe?
